Man sentenced to 15 years for vandalizing Florida mosque

#

A man who vandalized a Florida mosque by smashing windows and lights with a machete and leaving bacon at the scene pleaded guilty to criminal mischief to a place of worship.

The state attorney's office serving Brevard and Seminole counties said Michael Wolfe was sentenced to 15 years in prison followed by 15 years of probation after he pleaded guilty Tuesday. The sentence had a hate crime enhancement.

The 37-year-old was sentenced as a habitual offender. Titusville police arrested Wolfe in January 2016 after the New Year's Day vandalism. A surveillance video showed him smashing lights, cameras and windows with a machete.

Bacon was left by the front door. Consumption of pork and pork products made from pork is forbidden in Islam.

Good, wonder when he’ll realize it wasn’t worth it.

Everyone's reporting that 15 years is ridiculous... but nobody serves a full sentence any more, and this guy will be no different. His lawyers will appeal, the sentence will be changed, parole will be reached sooner than expected, etc.

People support the death penalty because it's considered the ultimate deterrent, right? Same thing here. Harsh penalties for hate crimes are supposed to be in place to stop such behaviors... and yet (as with the death penalty) the punishments don't stop the most heinous acts in our society from being committed.

But it makes for a good show.

Certainly this thug will enjoy the bubba's sausage while behind bars, for a looong time.

Wow that is excessive. The murderer in San Fran walked free.

15 yrs? just attempting to show cause and stop any more of this happening again. Bacon ? Really a crime ?

A despicable crime that should be dealt with hashly but not this. Even the worst in this country are entitled to fair treatment under the law. I expect a sentence modification. His attorney has a right to such a hearing.

Vandalism is a crime, and vandalism with a 'hate-crime enhancement' should indeed warrant a longer sentence.
But 15 years for this combination of crimes is excessive and unreasonable.

Not to worry - Trump's pardon will be coming down the pike as soon as Breitbart gives him the heads up.

So if this guy gets 15 years for a hate crime (which I fully support by the way) what do the people get who vandalized churches, synagogues, mosques, and Jewish cemeteries pretending to be white and racist? Wouldn’t inciting racial tensions be equally as horrific? I think the punishments should be the same.

Good! By leaving pork at the doorstep vandalism became a hate crime with much stiffer penalties. Hopefully he'll serve most of his sentence.

America's incarceration rate is 5-10 times that of other Western Democracies..."The land of the free and the home of the jailbirds". A country that incarcerates, per capita, more than the Soviet Union did at the height of the Gulags. According to the Sentencing Project there are 154,000 people incarcerated in Florida (101 in prison and 53 in jails) with a population of 20.6 million. Germany has 65,000 under sentence and in pre-trial detention with a population of 82 million. Where is safer with less crime, especially homicides? Under "truth in sentencing" (good policy never comes from sound bites or bumper-sticker slogans) he will have to serve 85% before any chance of any early release, for petty vandalism. In most countries that would be a fine and 30 days to be served on weekends.

How the hell can a guy get 15 years for vandalizing a building (even if it is a holy place) but a guy who is here undocumented (Jose Zarate) is found not guilty of murdering Kate Steinle? He should have at least gotten negligence or manslaughter convictions. Even if convicted by the feds for the new charges filed against him, the undocumented immigrant faces only 10 years in prison!

It's good to know that this person, who is consumed with hatred, will be removed from society BEFORE he can commit an assault or murder.

Another Trump voter out of commission for a while.

    15 years ???????
He would have got less had he driven a car into the people outside the mosque.
